The travel and business tourism industry is among the largest in the world, and it is hardly surprising that the idea of extending travel to ordinary citizens beyond the surface of the Earth has become quite popular in the last couple of years. With the modernity of technology that we are faced with today, traveling to space is no longer reserved exclusively for astronauts. Thanks to the American company Space Adventures any private (rich) citizen can now experience the wonder of floating in outer space. Space Adventures has been dedicated to “opening spaceflight and the space frontier” to ordinary citizens since 2001, and has been gaining much popularity since then. In fact, it was with Space Adventures’ Russian rockets that the first African, Mark Shuttleworth, went to space.

Mars is the holy grail of space exploration, at least until we get there. Unfortunately for astronauts of today, the chances of them going to Mars are slim to none. Experts from various space agencies around the world reckon that the first manned mission to Mars will only be launched after 2030. In the meantime, some lucky volunteers are spending 520 days cooped up in a mock spaceship as they simulate the conditions of a trip to the red planet.
