The more mobility we get the more mobility we demand. Unfortunately, mobile devices are limited by their battery power and proximity to electrical outlets. But Las Vegas-based Tremont Electric has come up with an appropriate solution: its nPower® PEG (personal energy generator) allows you to charge your hand-held gadgets, literally, on the move.

nPower® PEG uses kinetic energy generated by walking, hiking, running, cycling and kayaking (for example) to power up cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and portable gaming stations. It transfers and stores this energy into something your device can use via a magnetically-active mass system, which, according to the official nPower® PEG website, is complicated in theory but simple in practice. Basically, the more you move around the more talk-time and music you are able to enjoy.

Google Voice Search is one the most useful applications we’ve seen from Google in years. As the name suggests, searches are conducted based on voice commands. According to Google, Voice Search (VS) represents the company’s continued attempts to conquer the African market, and while the concept is not profit-driven, Nelson Mattos, Google’s vice president of engineering, admits that financial benefits will naturally follow Google’s wider reach.

With specific regard to the situation in South Africa, Mattos suggests that VS will play an important role in addressing the digital divide. “In South Africa you see the digital divide quite severely. It’s between two worlds; that’s why companies like us should have a dual strategy to increase the number of internet users,” said Mattos.

It was first brought to the wider public’s attention in Star Wars, when George Lucas envisioned holographic projections of people walking, talking and interacting with others far far away. Star Trek took holograms a step further when the Next Generation had fun and games on the Holodeck. Now the idea of holographic 3D technology is a virtual reality, or nearly one at any rate. Researchers at the University of Arizona have developed technology that can project a near 360-degree image to another location. The image updates every two seconds, which allows real-time interaction and is a marked improvement on the research group’s previous model which was in black and white and only updated every four minutes.

The recent reports posted by NPD state that the number one selling mobile operating system in the US is none other than Google Android. According to tnerd.com this “disclosure of truth, shouldn’t be very surprising”.

The supposed reason for Google Android’s success is its rapid rate of evolving. As per the stats Google Android holds the spot for the leading market place at 33% shares. RIM’s BlackBerry follows at 28% shares while Apple’s iPhone OS is coming in third with 22% shares.

Google Android is the leader in the open “battle grounds” for the open source mobile OS community unlike Apple’s proprietary OS system iPhone OS which is confined to the development of only apps registered by Apple developers and stores. It seems just about everybody wants the Android OS to be the operating system and this is what is attributing to Android OS’ success.
