Couch potatoes are in for a treat because the next generation of TVs is here (in the USA at least). TVs that blend all the traditional viewing pleasures with the convenience of the internet, as it relates to video, are the latest craze among television manufacturers. This is all thanks to Google TV, which is basically Google’s Android platform customised specifically to enhance the home entertainment experience. It’s been heralded as the best thing to hit TV since television was invented. But it’s also been criticised by reviewers who have found the user experience to be unrefined and at an almost pre-beta testing level.

Currently, Google TV is available on Sony Internet TV Blu-ray devices and Logitech Revue TVs, but Toshiba plans to muscle in on the action in early 2011.

For years now television has been a source of entertainment for people all around the world. News broadcasts, sitcoms, cartoons and reality shows have held a large and captive audience in front of the small (and recently much larger) television screen. However an increasing amount of our entertainment is now coming in the form of our computers and mobile phones.

This is because where the television lacks, our phones and computers more than make up in instant access to the World Wide Web. Nowadays finding relevant and entertaining content online is as easy as a search, but the web still lacks the high-quality viewing and other features of television. Google’s answer: combine the two.
