An enormous number of tablets were launched last year, it was like the Year of the Tablet or something. Tablets seem to be taking over the computing world, and it’s not surprising considering you can get internet capability, video chat, entertainment, and video and image capturing all in one compact, lightweight sleek device.

So what are the best tablets on the market? Your answer will probably depend on what you want to use it for. Some tablets offer more entertainment features while others have stronger video chat capabilities and long battery life.

Does the world need a new mouse? I don’t know, but either way meet the Penclic: the Swedish-designed device that is quite literally the combination of a pen and a mouse. The computer mouse is one of the very few technological items that has not developed very much since the 80s, but that is why Penclic is taking it to the next level. Penclic promises to provide a stylish and precise end result in less time than a mouse, as well as a cursor experience like no other.

The mouse is shaped like a pen with the tip on a swivel connected to a wide base. Manufacturing company Prestige International claims the Penclic provides a “relaxed working position and advanced precision” due to the integration of cutting edge technology and innovative Swedish design.

The world of gaming is finally joining the tablet scene. Razer, a company popular for gaming gadgets, is now bringing an entirely new dimension to gaming with the new Project Fiona, a hybrid tablet and gaming PC. I bet gaming fanatics all over the world are considering emptying their piggy banks to pocket this handy gadget. I can already see little kids walking around like zombies, unable to lift their heads from the screen, fingers stuck to the twin analogue joysticks.

Early January saw the return of the world’s largest electronics show in Las Vegas. CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2012 delivered the usual amount of big name reveations (Windows 8 for tablets) and rumors about a certain fruit company’s new releases (that’s the iPad3 and iPhone5, if you didn’t know). Without further delay, here are the highlights and need-to-knows from this year’s CES.

Ultrabooks

This is just a fancy name for really, really thin laptops. Most of the big PC companies are debuting ultrabooks some time in the coming year. These are three of the most interesting ones this year.

Amazon finally unveiled its new tablet computer at the Amazon Press Conference a few days ago. As one of the most anticipated devices of 2011, it is yet to be seen whether the new Amazon Kindle Fire will live up to its hype as the “iPad 3 killer”. It is not only packed with great new features but with its incredible price of $199, it is sure to give Apple’s cheapest $499 iPad a run for its money.

Digital cameras are among the many devices that are embracing rapid advances in technology to provide faster results, improved quality and more user-friendly options. Cameras have come a long way in just a few short years and the next wave of improvements is sure to create more demand, even if it is just so consumers can boast about having the latest and greatest technology.

More megapixels

The humble spectacle has been around for thousands of years in some form or other, since the ancient Chinese looked through thin, tinted pieces of grey quartz. Since then, glasses have really been left alone by the technology industry, which has touched almost every other market. The last major innovation in the field of glasses and sunglasses was way back in 1940, shortly after polarisation technology had been introduced. This came from Columbia Resins, a technology company experimenting with plastic compounds for different uses. They came up with CR-39, the 39th version of their polymer which was later adapted into millions of lenses, both tinted and vision correcting, and brought the price of glasses right down and to the masses. However, the advances in mobile wireless technology in the past few years combined with general advances in material and production technologies mean that lots of interesting glasses have been released in the past few years. Here are some of the most interesting:

While new vehicles may come with all the latest gadgets and gizmos built in, you can expand the functionality of second hand cars by augmenting them with accessories. In-car technology comes in all shapes and sizes, covering practical applications, pure entertainment and everything in between. Here are just a few of the latest gadgets that will be making an impact in 2012.

LED Car Signal

Vehicles have always used lights to communicate with other road users, but this has been restricted to indicating an intention to turn, reverse or brake. Now, with this new in-car LED display that you can hang from your rear window, it will be much easier to send more complex messages to drivers around you.

So we’ve got solar power and wind power, how about a bit of heartbeat power? Sound a bit far fetched? Well it might be a reality sooner than you think.

Jaymi Heimbuch reports that body movement powered batteries might be in use within the next five years. The American Chemistry Society meeting was held just over a week ago and, according to a group of scientists in attendance, in less than half a decade we could be powering our iPods as we walk around.

Is it a smart phone? Is it a tablet? No it's a smartablet.

Think about the gadgets you own; cell phone, laptop, tablet, and camera. Anything else? With the amount of gizmos on the market more and more people end up with a whole range devices. You would have thought that by now one company would be smart enough to develop a device that could do it all in one go. Perhaps we’re closer to that than we think.

Jaymi Heimbuch reports on Team Treehugger that people don’t buy tablet devices instead of something; they just get added to the long list of gadgets we can’t live without. But electronic giant Samsung might change all that. Apparently it’s working on a tablet device that might make them a must-have gadget instead of one of convenience.
