An enormous number of tablets were launched last year, it was like the Year of the Tablet or something. Tablets seem to be taking over the computing world, and it’s not surprising considering you can get internet capability, video chat, entertainment, and video and image capturing all in one compact, lightweight sleek device.

So what are the best tablets on the market? Your answer will probably depend on what you want to use it for. Some tablets offer more entertainment features while others have stronger video chat capabilities and long battery life.

They are forced to work 24-hour shifts, live in crowded dorms and work with poisonous chemicals, all for very little pay. These are the working conditions at the iPad manufacturing plants in China. Have you ever thought about the person who made your iPad? Have you thought about the impact it has on their life?

No one can deny that the iPad is an incredibly useful piece of equipment that makes it much easier to stay in touch with the world around us. At what cost though?

Two years ago, nearly 140 workers fell ill after using a poisonous chemical to clean iPhone screens. Last year, two separate explosions killed four workers and injured 75 people in Apple assembly plants.

Apple’s latest offering, the iPhone 4S is soon to arrive in South Africa. Yes, your PC can do almost everything that an iPhone can, but it’s not always with you, in your pocket. The applications (apps) on it are beautifully designed, offer ease of use and exciting ways to organise your life. Apple offers a choice of 500 000 different apps and since the App Store’s launch in 2008, 15 billion apps have been downloaded. So clearly I’m not the only one that likes Apple apps. Here’s what is cool about them:

Built in Apps

These apps mean you don’t have to pay for them; they’re already on the iPhone.

It’s almost like a movie series like The Fast and the Furious, except this sequel seems to be never-ending. Apple is set to release yet another mobile device; the iPhone 5. Since the first iPhone was introduced to the world in 2007 the mobile giant has successfully released an updated version every year and 2011 is no different. But what would make someone buy this version if the next updated version will probably be out next year? We check it out.

According to MSN, the iPhone 5 will incorporate the rumoured updated A5 processor that put the iPhone 4 and iPad ahead of other mobile phones. The processor allows power efficiency and is based on ARM processor architecture. This new version will feature a number of cores which will increase the mobile’s performance and battery life immensely.

South Africans have been in an iPad frenzy since Friday 28 January. It took eight months for Apple’s much lauded tablet to hit our shores and consumers have been agog for it. Eager beavers have been importing the device since it was first launched in April 2010, but this is the first time that it will officially be available at local stores. Those that imported their iPads may have scored early bragging rights but it looks as though the people who survived the waiting period will get the last laugh, as the locally available devices are likely to be up to R2400 cheaper than those sourced internationally.

The tablet pc market is hotting up as more tech companies prepare to capitalise on increasing consumer demand. The iPad is currently the undisputed market leader, but the gap is narrowing as big brands such as Samsung, Motorola and Acer refine their product offerings.

Technewsworld.com has been following developments in the tablet pc niche closely, with various writers/reviewers taking a look at some of Apple’s competitors.

Mike Martin, for instance, recently wrote about a new collaboration between Google and Motorola. The resulting tablet runs on Google’s Android 3.0 OS, which is also known as Honeycomb, and in lieu of an official name, that is what the device is being called. The prototype of the tablet device was unveiled by Andy Rubin, a well-known Google engineer, at the D: Dive into Mobile conference. It is reported to be more advanced that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, which also uses the Android platform, but not the newest Honeycomb version.

The Apple iPad 2 is expected to be released in April 2011 and already the net is full of rumours about its new features. A few of the expected new features include a second dock connector on the landscape side, a better and smaller screen and more available RAM.

One expected feature is causing a buzz in the tech world: some kind of retina display. No one knows for sure, but it is expected that the screen of the new Apple iPad 2 will have a pixel density that matches the current retina display. Experts and laymen have speculated that the screen will remain the same and that a camera (maybe even two) may be included, with the front-facing camera specifically for the use of FaceTime calls. The possibility of a three-axis gyro to support a better gaming experience is also being debated.
